Students Union and Student Services present cheque to Cystic Fibrosis Ireland

On Wednesday 9 October, Naude Du Plessis, Student Union President for 2012/13 presented a cheque for €8,500 to Cystic Fibrosis Ireland. The sum was raised by Naude and his Student Union team during their reign. Each year, the RCSI Student Union adopt a charity and hold events and activities during the year to raise funds on their behalf.

Corriena Brien and Sandra Bonetto from Student Services welcomed Cystic Fibrosis Ireland representative, Rosie Begley to RCSI. Rosie collected the cheque on behalf of CFI.

Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited disease that primarily affects the lungs and the digestive system. Ireland has the highest incidence of Cystic Fibrosis in the world. Approximately 1 in 19 Irish people are said to carry one copy of the altered gene that causes Cystic Fibrosis. Set up by a small group of parents, CFI celebrates its 50th year in 2013.

Corriena Brien, Student Services Manager congratulated Naude and his SU team for their commitment and dedication in raising this impressive sum of money. She went on to add, ‘It was Naudes experience while on hospital rotations that spurred his interest in Cystic Fibrosis. He was determined to do something to help. And he has certainly achieved this.
